Hey everyone (anyone?),

The new prompt will be to write about a world with an overpopulation problem!

Since I posted this late, pieces will not be due until 6/20 (father's day, btw).

An Intimate Introduction to Bi

This was written as a supplemental introduction to my YA superhero story.

I shouldn’t be telling you this, but the way we actually do all those cool action shots you see on YouTube is that we actually do them ourselves. Jumping off buildings like Batman, swinging over empty downtown streets like Spiderman? Yeah, we did that all ourselves. It’s not sophisticated special effects done by college students for a project and we’re not really college students or located on the West Coast either. It’s all a façade, constructed so none of those internet stalkers and superhero fanatics can find out who we really are. We’re not too keen being detected by the government either so we play it off as special effects and Hollywood magic. It helps that we do actually have someone capable of doing all the special events if we needed it.

Mandy is our tech whiz. She’s good with everything from calculators to satellite systems. Mandy’s father, my mother’s younger brother, heads the technical division for our Clan. He makes broadcasts to everyone in the clan, updating them on the newest technologies available to us. Generally before each big mission, the agent will either receive a package from him or drop by his base of operations to pick up new tools. As his apprentices, younger members of the clan update the central database with information from various international agency and government databases.

Apprenticeships are how our clan trains young members. We start physical training at age 4. We learn gymnastics and martial arts. Physical training is first because it can be started early and should a child not be fit for the life of a full fledge clan member, it’s the easiest to disguise as something else. Other skills are gradually layered on: technological warfare, basic medical skills and poison awareness, vehicle training, reconnaissance, stealth. Apprenticeships usually last a few months with a test at the end. Trials are usually done in teams and involve completing low importance tasks for the clan. The trials are organized by color: white, orange, yellow, green, purple, blue, brown are for apprenticeships. After apprenticeships, you choose a specialization and start training with a senior member of the clan. Red trails are at the end of your specialized training. Black trails mark your first solo mission.

That’s what Audrey’s preparing for right now. Audrey the oldest of us three and has chosen to specialize in reconnaissance like her father. Reconnaissance is a stealth intensive field which is a bit counter intuitive given Audrey’s fashionista ways. She’s always dressed in the latest fashions and she never blends in. All the rich kids envy her ability to acquire designer handbags and all the artsy hipster kids wish they had her sense of style. Needless to say, Audrey keeps us all dressed well.
My name is Bianca, most people call me Bi. I’m the director and the squad leader. We make these films for YouTube because I want to and we are very bored with High School. We may not be superhuman but we’re faster in almost every way than normal humans. We stand out too much to be allowed to participate on sports teams. Not that Mandy, Audrey and I have much room to complain. With all the training and trails clan members go through, most are home schooled. The three of us are very lucky in that our families live in the same city and we didn’t have to move to other places to complete the longer apprenticeships. Our parents scheduled out of town apprenticeships over summer and winter breaks and we’ve been allowed to attend normal school. I’ve just completed Red Trials under my mother for combat and she rewarded me with a brand new red Honda civic.

Junior year of High School is about to start and I can’t wait. Hopefully exciting things will happen.
